Government
Gordon County has a five member Board of Commissioners elected by the voters through at-large elections for four year staggered terms to represent the residents of the unincorporated area of the county. The Chairman and Vice Chairman are selected among the Board members for two year terms. The County also has six other constitutional officers elected by the voters through at- large elections for four year terms. Those officers are the Sheriff, Tax Commissioner, Clerk of Superior Court, Judge of the Probate Court, Judge of the Magistrate Court, and the Coroner.
The Board of Commissioners appoints a full-time County Administrator to supervise the day-to-day operations of the County.
The Gordon County Board of Commissioners meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month in the first floor conference room at the Gordon County Administration Building, 201 Wall Street, in Calhoun. The meeting on the first Tuesday begins at 10:00 a.m. and the meeting on the third Tuesday begins at 6:00 p.m. In addition, a work session is held approximately one hour before the regular meeting. The meeting time of the work session is subject to change depending on the size of the agenda. The public is encouraged to attend and participate in these public meetings. The City of Calhoun has a five member City Council elected by the voters through at-large elections for four year staggered terms to represent the residents of the city. The Calhoun City Council conducts their meetings on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Calhoun Depot, 109 S. King Street, in Calhoun. The City of Fairmount has a five member City Council elected by the voters through at-large elections for four year staggered terms to represent the residents of the city. The City of Plainville has a five member City Council elected by the voters through at-large elections for four year staggered terms to represent the residents of the city. The Plainville City Council conducts their meeting on the first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Plainville City Hall, 110 Earl Street in Plainville. The Town of Resaca has a four member Town Council elected by the voters through at-large elections for four year staggered terms to represent the residents of the city. The Resaca Town Council conducts their meeting on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Resaca Town Hall, 3032 Battlefield Parkway (U.S. 41) in Resaca. The City of Ranger has a five member City Council elected by the voters through at-large elections for four year staggered terms to represent the residents of the city. The Gordon County School Board has a seven member Board elected by the unincorporated area, City of Fairmount, City of Resaca, City of Plainville, and the City of Ranger voters through at-large elections for four year staggered terms to set policy and operate the county’s school system. The Calhoun City School Board has a five member Board elected only by the City of Calhoun voters through at-large elections for four year staggered terms to set policy and operate the city’s school system. All meetings of the above governmental entities are open to the public. All Gordon County citizens are encouraged to attend and participate in these meetings.
