How to Calculate a Millage Rate and the Property Taxes Owed

Once a resident has used the table above to calculate their 2009 millage rate on a piece of property, it is possible to estimate the property taxes owed. First, the millage rate must be divided by 1,000. For example, those residents living in the unincorporated areas of the county will take the 24.3 mills from the table above and divide it by 1,000 (or simply moving the decimal three places to the left) so that the millage rate is expressed as .0243.

To estimate the amount of property tax amount owed, simply multiply the assessed value of your property by the millage rate. In Georgia, property is assessed for taxes at 40% of the fair market value that is on file in the Tax Assessor’s Office.
